Nick’s Organic Farm Seeks Assistant Farm Manager

We farm about 185 certified organic acres at two locations on the Washington DC urban fringe—one in Frederick and one in Montgomery County, MD. Using modern farm equipment, we raise totally grassfed Angus beef, pastured chickens and turkeys, and free range eggs. We grow and sell various types of hay and baleage, and we maintain different types of pastures. We produce field corn, popcorn, and Indian corn, field soybeans, edamame, barley, and various organic seeds, such as barley, corn, and soy/edamame. This year we are getting back into vegetables with a non-profit educational vegetable garden and a for-profit market garden heavily based on high tunnel production.

Some interesting things that we do include research projects in conjunction with USDA’s Agricultural Research Service and our 12-year crop rotation for our cattle, hay and row crops. We use both summer and winter cover crops and plant multiple species together whenever possible. We also keep two dairy cattle for our own use so you will be able to learn about milking as well.

As a small farm, we must add value to our products by selling most of them directly to the end user whether that is a family or another organic farm. We process our own poultry and produce organic seed for small seed companies and for other organic farms to plant. We also grind our grains into poultry feeds for our use and to sell to other organic farms.

Employment Opportunity

We are looking to hire as soon as possible so we can begin training the successful applicant in advance of the 2013 growing season, with an emphasis on livestock, crop and vegetable production. Projects on the near term horizon include: farm scale composting, “green” energy and building projects, and expanding educational activities. Work would be split between both locations, but would be primarily at the larger Frederick County location.

Specific duties include:

  • Operation and maintenance of tractors and equipment
  • Care and feeding of livestock, and maintaining fencing for rotational grazing
  • Planting, cultivating and harvesting of row crops and vegetables
  • Processing poultry and grinding feed

The desired applicant would have some of the following qualifications:

  • Interest in organic/sustainable farming and local/regional food systems
  • Two years of farming experience
  • Experience operating farm tractors and equipment
  • Experience with row crop, vegetable, hay, seed, beef or poultry production
  • Mechanical ability to do simple repairs
  • Related skills in any of these areas: carpentry, welding, plumbing, electrical, masonry, etc.
  • Relevant educational background (agricultural, environmental, life sciences, etc.)

Compensation commensurate with experience and abilities. Medical benefits available and housing available at the Frederick location.

Having your own transportation would be appreciated but is not required. If you are interested, send salary requirements and a letter of interest and/or a resume.

Seeking Applicants for the 2012 Accokeek Foundation Heritage Livestock Program Internship

The Accokeek Foundation maintains heritage breeds of livestock and poultry. Many visitors appreciate the beauty of the farm animals without realizing their important role in farming systems. Over the centuries, domesticated animals have lived here with humans and have contributed to shaping this land as we see it today. At the Accokeek Foundation, we care for our farm animals in a way that enhances the health and stability of the natural and agricultural ecosystems of this special place. As we manage animals, we maintain open lands in an ecologically sound manner. Some of these heritage breeds are typical of the time and place that we represent at our National Colonial Farm, while others are breeds typical of the Colonial Era. Our livestock collection serves two purposes: the first is to provide authentic period breeds for interpretation at our National Colonial Farm (exhibit animals); and the second is to maintain living collections that protect and preserve the genetic diversity of our agricultural heritage (breeding animals). We have earned a distinguished reputation for our efforts in this endeavor, and it is important that our work with heritage breeds continues in a way that maintains and enhances this reputation. It also is imperative that we manage our livestock and land in a way that demonstrates the most humane and sustainable methods available.

General Internship Information:

  • One internship will be available for the Summer 2012 season.
  • Positions will run for three months, roughly from June-August.
  • A stipend of id="mce_marker"000 per month and health insurance benefits will be offered.
  • Applicants are encouraged to apply before April 15, 2012, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Please expect to be physically present for any interviews.
  • Schedule will be Monday through Friday with occasional pre-scheduled weekends required.

Apprenticeship Details:

  • The internship program is designed for beginning farmers who have at least one season’s worth of experience and want to round out their training. Our goal is to expose interns to many experiences, techniques, and approaches to sustainable livestock management and heritage breeding while accomplishing the Foundation’s work.
  • Interns will be engaged mainly in “land-based training,” in which they will participate in all aspects of our heritage livestock breeding program. This is an intensive program, and applicants can expect to work 40-55 hours a week in all weather conditions.
  • Specific on-farm training includes: all aspects of livestock management (feeding, breeding, healthcare, animal training, working with oxen team, etc), tool and machinery operation and maintenance, record keeping, and more.
  • In addition to the daily work, apprentices will have the benefit of formal training, including field trips to other farms in the area, participation in the Foundation’s workshops, and the ability to receive agricultural instruction from other institutions and individuals in the Chesapeake region.
  • This position is designed for those with a serious desire to pursue farming as a way of life, and every effort will be made to provide professional support after the season is over. It should be noted that the work involved is challenging in many ways, and a strong emphasis is placed on safety and personal accountability.

Apprentice Qualifications:

  • Applicants should be reliable and willing to take on and accept responsibility.
  • The interns will be a part of the daily workings of the farm, and therefore should be physically capable and able to lift 50 lbs or more.

Part-Time Internships Available at Radix Farm, Upper Marlboro, Maryland

Radix Farm is looking for one or two part-time interns for the 2012 season.

Interning on Radix Farm will give you a clear sense of what it takes to run a small farm business, how to market produce through a CSA, farmers market, and restaurants, and training in organic production of hundreds of varieties of vegetables. Interning with Radix Farm would be a great fit for someone that wants to gain more farm experience but is not currently able to live on the farm or commit to working 50+ hours a week.

Radix Farm interns will participate in planting, weeding, harvesting, transplanting, mulching, distributing CSA shares, and various small farm enterprises. Interns will often work alongside the farmer, and are encouraged to ask questions while completing tasks to learn while doing.  We can also arrange the opportunity for farm visits and workdays on other area farms.  Interns can take plenty of fresh produce home every week.

Internship Options

One-Day Per Week Intern

For those with little farm experience but an interest in learning the basics of a vegetable farm, we offer a one-day per week internship.   Interns will participate mainly with harvesting, washing, and packing veggies, as well as with planting, weeding, mulching, and other farm tasks.  Ideally, the intern(s) would be able to commit to one full day a week for at least four months, though preferably for the entire season (March through November).  The intern must be available to work either Tuesday or Friday.

Multiple-Day Per Week Intern

For those with at least one full season farm experience and an interest in pursuing farming as a career, we offer a two to four day per week internship.  In addition to the field tasks mentioned above, these interns will learn about the business end of farming, including planning, record keeping, and budgeting, and will be asked to take on independent projects. The intern must be available to work either Tuesday or Friday and one to three other weekdays (occasional weekend days available). Preferably, the intern would be available for a full season (March to November).  Upon successful completion of the season, there may be opportunities for advancement next year.

Requirements

Farming experience is preferred, though not required. Most importantly, we are looking for individuals who have a keen interest in learning about small-scale farming, have a strong work ethic,  are fast learners and efficient, and are able to anticipate what needs to be done and take the initiative to do it.

No housing is available on the farm.  Interns must provide their own transportation to the farm. Radix Farm is located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland - approximately a 30 minute drive from Washington DC, and only 1.5 miles outside of the beltway.

How to Apply

Applicants should send a brief description or resume of previous farming and/or other work experience with at least one work/farm related reference to radixfarm(at)gmail.com.  Also describe your availability, including preferred weekday workdays, date available to begin, and length of time available.

See www.radixfarm.wordpress.com for more information.
