| Cynthia Barstow, who will deliver the 2008 conference keynote address, has helped farmers become savvy marketers. |
Popular “eco-foods” author, university professor and consultant Cynthia Barstow will headline Future Harvest’s ninth annual conference, scheduled for Jan. 18-19, 2008. Don’t miss Barstow’s keynote address on the opportunities for growers created by consumers’ increasing interest in how food is produced.
President of Seed to Shelf: Marketing for Sustainability, Barstow works with groups -- ranging from Pennsylvania apple farmers to Wisconsin potato growers to Massachusetts specialty herb producers -- to improve their marketing strategies.
Barstow, who began her career in marketing in New York City, became interested in sustainable agriculture after moving to New England and witnessing the amount of agricultural chemicals applied in an apple orchard where she and her husband lived.
She went back to school to study agroecology, then wrote the book – literally – on how to shop for eco-friendly produce. Her book, The Eco- Foods Guide: What’s Good for the Earth is Good for You! was published in 2002. The Eco-Foods Guide has been described as a straightforward, conversational and optimistic examination of the downsides of such common agricultural practices as the use of pesticides and growth hormones, and the overuse of nonrenewable resources.
Some of her most recent clients for brand development include Ambassador Organics (Carol Moseley Braun) Chang Naturals (Zana drink) and Sustainable Sourcing (Melissa Kushi). She is a frequent writer in the natural foods industry and is a columnist for the Natural Foods Merchandiser.
