Future Harvest-CASA
2005 Directory of Community Supported Agriculture Farms in Maryland,
Delaware, Virginia, West
Virginia
Community
supported agriculture (CSA) farms connect farmers and consumers by creating
a mutually beneficial relationship through weekly “shares”
of the harvest. In a CSA, consumers don’t just buy food from
particular farms but instead become “subscribing members”
of those farms for the duration of the growing season. Some farms also
offer “working shares”, trading labor in exchange for
food produced.
Joining
a CSA gives members access to a variety of fresh, seasonal produce grown
by local farmers. The farmer benefits by receiving income in advance of
the season to cover operating costs, gaining some financial security. In
addition, many farms offer CSA members opportunities to experience rural
life. Depending on the CSA, members can visit their farm and take part
in festivals, work days, harvests or family fun days.
In
the Chesapeake region, CSA farms range in size from 20 to 200 shareholders.
Payment of shares can be quarterly, monthly, or weekly. Harvested vegetables,
herbs, flowers and fruit may be picked up at the farm or delivered to a
central location. Some CSAs offer egg and meat shares, as well as personalized
delivery options. Many CSA farmers are certified organic producers following
newly adopted USDA production standards, others may follow biodynamic or
sustainable farming methods, striving to reduce chemicals and pesticides.
Future Harvest-CASA has compiled this list of more than 50 CSAs operating
in Maryland , Virginia , West Virginia and Delaware .
