Seeking Applicants for the 2012 Accokeek Foundation Heritage Livestock Program Internship

The Accokeek Foundation maintains heritage breeds of livestock and poultry. Many visitors appreciate the beauty of the farm animals without realizing their important role in farming systems. Over the centuries, domesticated animals have lived here with humans and have contributed to shaping this land as we see it today. At the Accokeek Foundation, we care for our farm animals in a way that enhances the health and stability of the natural and agricultural ecosystems of this special place. As we manage animals, we maintain open lands in an ecologically sound manner. Some of these heritage breeds are typical of the time and place that we represent at our National Colonial Farm, while others are breeds typical of the Colonial Era. Our livestock collection serves two purposes: the first is to provide authentic period breeds for interpretation at our National Colonial Farm (exhibit animals); and the second is to maintain living collections that protect and preserve the genetic diversity of our agricultural heritage (breeding animals). We have earned a distinguished reputation for our efforts in this endeavor, and it is important that our work with heritage breeds continues in a way that maintains and enhances this reputation. It also is imperative that we manage our livestock and land in a way that demonstrates the most humane and sustainable methods available.

General Internship Information:

  • One internship will be available for the Summer 2012 season.
  • Positions will run for three months, roughly from June-August.
  • A stipend of id="mce_marker"000 per month and health insurance benefits will be offered.
  • Applicants are encouraged to apply before April 15, 2012, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Please expect to be physically present for any interviews.
  • Schedule will be Monday through Friday with occasional pre-scheduled weekends required.

Apprenticeship Details:

  • The internship program is designed for beginning farmers who have at least one season’s worth of experience and want to round out their training. Our goal is to expose interns to many experiences, techniques, and approaches to sustainable livestock management and heritage breeding while accomplishing the Foundation’s work.
  • Interns will be engaged mainly in “land-based training,” in which they will participate in all aspects of our heritage livestock breeding program. This is an intensive program, and applicants can expect to work 40-55 hours a week in all weather conditions.
  • Specific on-farm training includes: all aspects of livestock management (feeding, breeding, healthcare, animal training, working with oxen team, etc), tool and machinery operation and maintenance, record keeping, and more.
  • In addition to the daily work, apprentices will have the benefit of formal training, including field trips to other farms in the area, participation in the Foundation’s workshops, and the ability to receive agricultural instruction from other institutions and individuals in the Chesapeake region.
  • This position is designed for those with a serious desire to pursue farming as a way of life, and every effort will be made to provide professional support after the season is over. Part-Time Internships Available at Radix Farm, Upper Marlboro, Maryland

Radix Farm is looking for one or two part-time interns for the 2012 season.

Interning on Radix Farm will give you a clear sense of what it takes to run a small farm business, how to market produce through a CSA, farmers market, and restaurants, and training in organic production of hundreds of varieties of vegetables. Interning with Radix Farm would be a great fit for someone that wants to gain more farm experience but is not currently able to live on the farm or commit to working 50+ hours a week.

Radix Farm interns will participate in planting, weeding, harvesting, transplanting, mulching, distributing CSA shares, and various small farm enterprises. Interns will often work alongside the farmer, and are encouraged to ask questions while completing tasks to learn while doing.  We can also arrange the opportunity for farm visits and workdays on other area farms.  Interns can take plenty of fresh produce home every week.

Internship Options

One-Day Per Week Intern

For those with little farm experience but an interest in learning the basics of a vegetable farm, we offer a one-day per week internship.   Interns will participate mainly with harvesting, washing, and packing veggies, as well as with planting, weeding, mulching, and other farm tasks.  Ideally, the intern(s) would be able to commit to one full day a week for at least four months, though preferably for the entire season (March through November).  The intern must be available to work either Tuesday or Friday.

Multiple-Day Per Week Intern

For those with at least one full season farm experience and an interest in pursuing farming as a career, we offer a two to four day per week internship.  In addition to the field tasks mentioned above, these interns will learn about the business end of farming, including planning, record keeping, and budgeting, and will be asked to take on independent projects. The intern must be available to work either Tuesday or Friday and one to three other weekdays (occasional weekend days available). Preferably, the intern would be available for a full season (March to November).  Upon successful completion of the season, there may be opportunities for advancement next year.

Requirements

Farming experience is preferred, though not required. Most importantly, we are looking for individuals who have a keen interest in learning about small-scale farming, have a strong work ethic,  are fast learners and efficient, and are able to anticipate what needs to be done and take the initiative to do it.

No housing is available on the farm.  Interns must provide their own transportation to the farm. Radix Farm is located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland - approximately a 30 minute drive from Washington DC, and only 1.5 miles outside of the beltway.

How to Apply

Applicants should send a brief description or resume of previous farming and/or other work experience with at least one work/farm related reference to radixfarm(at)gmail.com.  Also describe your availability, including preferred weekday workdays, date available to begin, and length of time available.

The Accokeek Foundation blends history, ecology, economics, and conservation to teach land stewardship and sustainable use of natural resources, as well as to interpret the natural and cultural heritage of the Tidewater Potomac. Building on our Beginning Farmer Apprentice program, the CAES offers workshops, field days, presentations, community forums, and guided tours covering topics ranging from sustainable agriculture to green living, environmental science, and local food. WANTED: Farmers to participate in Silver Spring's Eat Drink Go Local Event on 10/22

It's that time again and we are looking for any last minute farmers who may want to participate in our EDGL event in Silver Spring in just a couple weeks.

The Maryland Wineries Association (MWA) is recruiting farmers to be part of an innovative and exciting series of events which celebrate the “go local” movement in Maryland. Eat•Drink•Go Local brings together farmers, chefs and wine with a casual, open-air farmers’ market feel. MWA will be promoting the event through statewide advertising and public relations efforts.
Participation in Eat•Drink•Go Local is free for farmers. You may sell your farm products at these events, just as you would at a farmers market. This is a great opportunity to reach consumers who might not currently shop at farmers markets, to supplement your market schedule, or to test the waters if you are new to direct-to-consumer marketing.

In focusing on various Maryland regions and the local products they produce, the Eat•Drink•Go Local events will cater to the fast-growing interest in agritourism and the popularity of buying local products. Preference will be given to farmers from within the county where each event is being held, with farmers from surrounding counties participating as space allows.

Announcing: MFAI Public Policy Internships for 2012

Background and Purpose: The Michael Fields Agricultural Institute (MFAI) is a non-profit agricultural institute founded in 1984 in East Troy, Wisconsin. Our research, education, technical assistance and public policy work seeks to revitalize farming and help both urban and rural populations meet common concerns. These concerns include how our food is grown; whether farming is a profitable enterprise; the long-term fertility of the soil; purity of water; and conservation of the Earth?s resources.

As part of MFAI’s educational mission, in January of 2012 we will begin our ninth year of public policy internships. We do this largely to help the sustainable agriculture movement continue to draw exciting, committed, informed activists into the work of creating and advancing public policies that support sustainable agriculture. We believe that MFAI?s policy program offers an excellent avenue to train and engage potential advocates in such policy work.

What the Policy Internship Offers: Policy interns will have the opportunity to assist in coordinating

the Fiscal Year 2013 grassroots agricultural appropriations campaign; engage in early organizing for the 2012 Farm Bill; develop new grassroots and media contacts in key congressional and senate districts nationally and develop similar strategies for Wisconsin grassroots network development; participate in state sustainable agricultural policy development, such as state funding and implementation of sustainable agriculture programs; join policy conference calls of groups such as the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition; work with NSAC staff for two weeks in Washington, D.C.; and attend at least one major national and one state movement-related conference.

Interns will be able to conduct background research on at least one agricultural policy topic that both benefits the movement and is of personal interest to them. Interns will have an opportunity to write an opinion editorial and write press releases and/or newsletter articles on policy issues. MFAI?s policy interns will be able to participate to the degree they wish to in MFAI?s other education and training workshops.

The Policy Program Director and Associate Director will commit to providing supervision of no less than 2 hours per week after an intensive introduction and orientation.

Internship Expectations: MFAI will expect at least a 50% time commitment from policy interns. Interns will operate from Madison, Wisconsin, the location of MFAI’s Policy Program, and will be responsible for arranging their own housing, food, computer access and other needs.

Duration/Schedule: We offer these internships for five months, from January through June. Start and end dates are negotiable once interns are selected, and the weekly schedule of hours worked is flexible.

Potential Candidates: We will consider any candidate with a demonstrated interest in sustainable agriculture and/or agricultural policy. We place a priority on candidates who see sustainable agricultural policy as a career direction, and we pay attention to the quality of the writing sample submitted.

Finances: MFAI will pay a $450/month stipend, up to id=mce_marker00/month in work-related supplies, phone, Internet services, mailing costs, and transportation. We will pay for a roundtrip ticket to Washington, plus lodging and a modest per diem while in Washington, D.C. for two weeks. We will also cover registration to participate in MFAI trainings and events and will support interns attending at least one national sustainable agriculture movement-related conference and one state conference.

Application Process: Interested applicants should submit a letter expressing reasons for interest in this position (with emphasis on their interest in a sustainable agriculture policy career), relevant background, a writing sample, names/contact information for three references, and confirmation of housing, computer access, and other arrangements by Friday, November 4, 2011. (Applicants from out of town may simply note that they understand that they need to make these arrangements and are prepared to do so.) Please send applications to Margaret Krome, MFAI Policy Program Director, 2524 Chamberlain Ave., Madison, WI 53705. Parkside Kenilworth Farmers Market Recruiting Farmers.

Farmers Market Management Associates, has been tasked with starting a market in the Parkside neighborhood in NE DC.   This will be an exciting neighborhood over the next few years.  The developer who hired FMMA has 15 acres in NE DC.  They have already broken ground on a senior center and 200 townhouses, and they have plans to establish the main campus of the Community College of DC in easy walking distance.

In a few years, this will be one of the hottest locations in the city, and the people who move quickly now will be able to take advantage.

You don't have to take my word for it, please visit http://dcmud.blogspot.com/search/label/City%20Interests for maps and details.

Our client would like to begin the farmers market the Saturday of Labor day weekend, continuing through Thanksgiving.  We will start up again in the spring.

Because this is such short notice, we are waiving all farmers fees for at least the first year.  Furthermore, the developer will purchase food for donation to the Capital Area Food Bank and its partners.  Participating farmers will have a guaranteed minimum sale.

We have a strong need for an organic vegetable grower, but we are open minded.
