Black Yield Institute seeking 2 farm assistants

We’re looking for (2) hardworking, self-motivated, and good-humored individuals to join our farm for the primary season of March to November. Applicants must have prior farm or closely related work experience.

The Farm Assistants will serve the critical functions within People’s Urban Agriculture of BYI. This position reports and works directly with the Farm Manager. The Farm Assistants will assist with and execute the agricultural programs and related initiatives (POP Marketplace, POP delivery, V-day etc) supporting various public and community programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with outreach for all volunteer, market and community events.

  • Assist with the management of  crop production: field crop planting, compost system, weed and pest management

  • Assist with the life cycle of food production (harvesting,processing,distribution,sales) for CHUCG market outlets.

  • Co-lead and lead volunteer groups and offer technical assistance to community garden members at the farm.

Required

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience with sustainable agriculture/gardening or  related experience 

  • Experience working with diverse groups of people living on low incomes

  • Ready to commit for a full season of farming. 

  • Comfortably lift 30+lbs.

  • Enjoy repetitive tasks.

  • Reliable transportation with a  clean driving record

  • Work appropriate clothes, shoes, and essential farm tool

  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor on a daily basis

Preferred

  • Commitment to Black Liberation, social justice, and racial equity

  •  Understanding of and commitment to building power and moving toward land and food sovereignty

Term & Compensation 

The Farm Assistant will be required to work 20 hour per week at $15/hr; work requires weekend commitments. This is a contractual position from March to November 2021. We are hiring for two (2) Farm Assistants.
