Sharp’s at Waterford Farm is looking for a full-time employee this growing season. The position would be expected to participate in all aspects of our farm operations. This is a growth position where a skilled worker could further their knowledge in sustainable greenhouse production, educational programs for schools and camp groups and general farm operations. This is a seasonal position.
We are a custom-grow greenhouse plug operation, small retail greenhouse and participate in a few off farm weekend events in the Baltimore area. We grow sustainably and interact with many local farms growing their transplants to include pick your own operations, florists and market gardeners. We use organic fertilization, compost to produce our soils, release insects and use organic products in our production. We are open 7 days a week beginning mid April until early June.
We offer educational tours for school groups and in the summer, camp groups. Please check out the website for the tour descriptions. You might participate in the tours as a tour guide and in the set up and breakdown of each tour program (this is dependent on the state of our tours business. Due to Covid-19 we had zero tours in 2020). To the extent that we have animals for tours, we collectively care for the animals on a daily basis. Tours begin mid April and continue until mid November.
We do have a small demonstration garden for tour groups and for our farm use. In the spring and summer, we harvest herbs and cherry tomatoes for sale to restaurants. In the fall, we have a full scale agrotourism program to include pumpkins, fall squashes, all the fall decorative items, mums, pick your own popcorn and pumpkins, campfires, mazes and a country market. We are open 7 days a week during the late September to early November time frame. The yearly work flow focuses on the greenhouse in the spring, while late spring and summer is a mix of greenhouse, educational tours and market garden programs.
Your Commitment: We are looking for a self-starter interested in furthering their skill set and someone that potentially can join the team on a permanent basis. The minimum work week is 40 hours, with extended hours necessary during the key times of the year. Please note that this is a seasonal job. Availability at least one weekend day a week is required from mid April to early November. Expect extended work hours in the month of April and May and October. Travel and vacations should accommodate these work commitments.
Our Commitment: We will mentor you in all the above areas plus in general farm tasks. Our goal is to stretch your talents and skills. We are dedicated to you having enough time off for personal development and hobbies.
Compensation: Depends somewhat on your skill level at starting. We are looking at your compenancy in the greenhouse, ability to drive equipment and general minor repairs as needed in the greenhouses, animal knowledge and people skills. The more independent you are working on the farm the better, but this is a full-time position that will strengthen your skills for other opportunities. Based on skills: Salary is $12.00 to $15.00 per hour. On farm housing can be discussed.
Application: Please email a letter of interest with your resume to Alexander at farmquestions@Sharpfarm.com or if you have questions, call him at 202-790-0408. The start date is flexible but ideally ASAP and terminating in mid-November. These specifics can be arranged with Alexander.
